Pete Schourek

Pete Schourek

Slight of build despite being 6'5", Schourek was an entertaining pitcher to watch given the manner in which he fit the "crafty lefty" archetype and his tendency to stick out his tongue while delivering pitches. When Schourek threw a one-hit shutout against the Expos late in his rookie season of 1991, eight-year-old me was certain that the left-hander would headline the Mets' rotation for the next decade. After a solid 1992 campaign, however, Schourek was brutal in 1993 and would be waived prior to the 1994 season. Remarkably, he would piece together an amazing season with the Reds in 1995 (18-7, 190.1 IP, 160/45 K/BB, 3.22 ERA, 4.1 WAR) that resulted in a second-place finish in the NL Cy Young voting behind the untouchable Greg Maddux in what proved to be his one real year in the sun.
