Edgardo Alfonzo

Given his quiet nature and skill set that was strong in all areas without having a trademark dominant attribute, it felt as though Alfonzo was often the overlooked star on the strong Mets teams of the late 90s and early 00s. Given that Alfonzo made only one all-star team and was completely left off of the Hall of Fame ballot despite amassing four season with at least five WAR (in contrast, mediocre lefty reliever Brian Fuentes was selected to four ASG, while Lenny Harris and his career 1.7 WAR was listed on the HOF ballot), that reputation seems to be accurate. I am a fan of the players who provide great value without making many waves, though, and loved watching Alfonzo grind out at bats against the toughest pitchers (see: two homers off of Randy Johnson in Game 1 of the 1999 NLDS) prior to his career unfortunately being hampered by back problems.
